Guest host Richard Dunk brings you highlights and low-lifes from four sets over two nights at The Matrix in San Francisco in late November 1969 with the Velvets as rejiggered after the departure of bassist John Cale. Tune in as Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, Doug Yule, and drummer Maureen Tucker strut and nod thru the classic nihilistic Velvet Underground repertoire in the original home of the Jefferson Airplane – including a 37-minute version of Sister Ray. As for the adult. Topics: The Other Side, Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, Doug Yule, Maureen Tucker, The Velvet Underground. Title: The Velvet Underground and Nico Director: Andy Warhol Year:1966 Language: English 16mm, black and white Even ardent fans of the velvet underground will probably move uneasily in their chairs during this picture.
The movie includes everything, except for a VU performance. The band IS there, and they are playing, but it is an incoherent jam session from hell rather then something familiar. Warhol accompanies the music with repeating focus shifts, lighting experiments, bizarre camera. I recently got the 72-disc Grateful Dead box set masterpiece, The Complete Europe '72 Recordings. The Dead's April-May 1972 tour through Europe is one that has been thought by many Deadheads as the best the band ever did. Not only was there crisp playing by all members of the band, but this is the last hurrah for Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan, the bluesy 'frontman' of the band's early years. This tour afforded the best chance to hear his style blending with the jazz-leaning. Topics: Grateful Dead, Europe '72, Europe, 1972, Jerry Garcia. Goth Music Show, December 3, 2016. It is also noted that the song was written by all three members of Nirvana, in contrast to the majority of the group's songs which were written by frontman Kurt Cobain. (If you are unaware of what I am refering to, click on the above Wikipedea link)I've done this several times, including last night. While there are definite points where the music / lyrics synch really well to the action in the movie,I don't think there is enough to support the idea that the band composed Dark Side to match the film. If they did, they did not doa very good job, as there are way too many places where the music / lyrics has nothing to do with the action in the movie. Finally, andmost importantly, why the hell would the band even do this? It makes no sense. That said, it is still interesting to watch.73-Mar-6: Kiel Auditorium - St. I recently started to (temporarily) listen to some of my 1974-1975 recordings and felt like I wanted to write a comment about the song Raving + Drooling (early Sheep).By the time the 1975 shows ended in July, the band had been banging this song out for over a year.
During that time you would think they would have shaped it intoa decent song, not something that sounded like it was destined for the trash bin. From the first time they played it in 1974 to the last show in 1975 thesong consistently sounded like shit. They never managed to make it sound like anything other than a work in progress that never made any progress.Though not nearly as bad as R+D, Gotta Be Crazy started out kind of weak in Nov 1974 (other than the fantastic AHM-like vocals simulating dog howling - I've always thoughtthat they should have kept that bit).
Over time that song came together. Shine On sounded pretty decent right away. R+D, on the other hand, suckedas much on Day x as it did on Day 1. The Animals tour suffered due to it being a coliseum tour, playing to very large audiences, usually in a large, open air stadium. The vast majority of the recordings from this tour have that large, open air coliseum sound, which is not very engaging. Animals had a sound that wasmore earthy than they could repoduce live. Though Animals is by far my favorite studio album of Pink Floyd, this is a tour that I rarely listen to, thoughI have all circulating recordings from this tour.
Animals is a superb but mostly underrated album that was the last of their progressive albums, which is every album they released up to this point. A definite change occured between Animals and The Wall.By the time they began sessions for The Wall, they were a different band - one that Waters mostly dominated, and one that was definitely more pop rock oriented. That said, this was still a good tour, with Pigs usually being the high point. I love it when sometimes in Pigs Roger says the number of shows played so far on the tour. For shows listed below where Roger says a number, the number is listed in brackets.
MPEG video from 2nd gen source and is not indexed - last 11.17m is a repeat of Whipping Post from an alt source.Once again the cameramen and the person directing what is being shown prove themselves to be complete freaking idiots. In Liz Reed when Dickey is soloing, where do the cameras spent much of the time? Looking at the drummers. Watching drummers is likewatching paint dry. It's clear that the people filming most music performmances know nothing about music. The British definitely seem to do a much better job. Has the wonderful Scraps!
This is a weird show, not at all like the other 2004 shows - has more sound effects, the guitar and drums make a lot of use of echoe, the bass player is often more upfront, playing in a different style, andBuckethead is not playing his standard way, playing many things slightly differently than usual. Has a cool section when a woman dressed in a classic Arabian outfit (his girlfriend, who uses the stage name Big D) twirls two large pieces of cloth in dim multi-coloured lights, which comes across as a beautiful gesture of love - excellent2008-2009: various locations (FLV + MP4 AVI: 131 tracks: 701.57m) VG/E08-Mar-6: Fort Collins, CO (AVI: 99.40m) E2011-2012: various locations (FLV + MP4 AVI: 131 tracks: 613.21m) VG/EIMO, his 2011-June-17 show in Mesa was the best of the 2011-2012 shows - he's on fire this night. I almost visited my sister who lives in Mesa to see this show with herbut the plane tickets were pretty high, given it was the last minute.
I saw him on 2011-Sept-9 in nearby Richmond, VA (a wonderful city). Unfortunately it was definitely NOT an'on' night for him, as he seemed tired after all the shows he played earlier on the tour and was just going through the motions, unlike the freaking Mesa show. If I did not already know,I would have thought the Mesa show was from 2009, something which most of the 2011-2012 shows were not on par with.2011-2012: various locations (FLV + MP4 AVI: 131 tracks: 559.02m) VG/EThis has a different video source, than on YouTube 5, of his wonderful Mesa show on 2011-June-17, which I think was by far the best of his 2011-2012 run(see above for more of my opinion about the Mesa show). The second set pales in comparision to the first and is definitely not essential listening material. For me this is the definitive performance of As Long As I Have You, You Shook Me, and How Many More Times.I am not sure if these were two separate shows or the same show with an intermission, but those people who only saw the 2nd set got royally screwed.69-Apr-27: San Francisco, CA (Low Gen: FLAC 2CD) VG+/E-Definitely clearer than my other recording, though has less bassThe first set (Disc 1) is my absolute favorite Zeppelin performance. IMO, As Long HMMT is the best 50m Zep ever played. The whole band is on fire, but Page is the shining star, letting loose with solo after solo, especially in As Long HMMT.And then when they go into the Mulberry Bush segment the whole thing becomes so fucking amazing.
